The Big Data for Beginners course is designed to introduce the Big Data ecosystem. The course begins with basic concepts behind how Hadoop systems are laid out and how they function. Additionally, it covers the different types of work that you might consider for using Hadoop, and whether or not it is the right tool.

Josh is a Business Intelligence Consultant with Pragmatic Works. He has been working with SQL Server for almost ten years. He speaks at multiple IT events every year, including SQL Saturdays and Code on the Beach. He is also a member of the Business Intelligence and Big Data Virtual Chapters of PASS, the Professional Association of SQL Server. Josh lives in Orlando, FL where he is a member of OPASS, or Orlando’s local PASS chapter.

 

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE THE CLASS

No previous SQL experience is necessary. A basic understanding of Linux and PowerShell is needed to understand the Deployments section. A basic knowledge of Excel, Power Pivot and Power Query will be helpful for the Data Presentation section.

The Big Data for Beginners class is an intensive class designed to help get you introduced to the Big Data ecosystem. The class starts off by introducing you to the basic concepts behind how Hadoop systems are laid out and how they function. We will look at the different types of work that you might consider Hadoop for, and whether or not it is the right tool. We’ll also take a look at the different data systems like HCatalog, Hive, and NoSQL options. We’ll also start digging in to deployment options and start going through options for onsite deployment. We will continue with deployments, but crossover to cloud deployments. The class will wrap up discussing the various tools for manipulating data, visualizing data, and optimization techniques for your environment.
